Ways of Seeing: Architectural Design

  • Course Description:

    This course is a journey into the hidden but fascinating world of design through the field of architecture.

    Students will explore concepts of math, ratio, proportions, tessellations, rotation, symmetry as they explore basic concepts of Architecture through:

    • Understanding Ratio and Proportion, Tessellations, Geometry
    • Model making
    • Assemblage and sketching
    • Visits to architecture studios and temple towns

    By the end of the programme, students will start seeing their surroundings differently, thinking differently, and have the tools to make meaningful designs that add value to human life. A popular and powerful course in its 5th avatar including a session in Dubai!!

  • Instructor Profile:

    Bhavin Shukla

    Bhavin is an architect and an educator. He is the founder of ‘The Design Toolbox’ and teaches Architecture at CEPT University. Apart from his engagement with the design of buildings, Bhavin has been actively involved in architectural research – he was part of the research and curation team for an exhibition on 'The Step-wells of Ahmedabad’. His areas of interest include history and theory of architecture and design language.

    Ramya Ramesh

    Ramya Ramesh is a talented architect from CEPT University. She completed her Master’s (MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development) at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London. She has also worked as an architect at Biome Environmental Solutions in Bangalore for two years. She is currently a faculty member at CEPT University in Ahmedabad.

Think Like a Mathematician

  • Course Description:

    Mathematics in the earlier days, around 100 years back, was seen as a set of equations, variables, to solve problems, in life and was one of the difficult subjects to visualise and think. The concept of search engines, that is Google, came in the year 1998 using principles of mathematics.

    Even social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter work on same principles of mathematics and each has a unique Algorithm that reflects Math behind these. From modern airlines, modern airports, and Metro railways, Bullet Trains and from Finger prints to face recognition - all the modern technological developments have come from Algebra, Matrices, Probability Theory, Permutations and Combinations.

    All the above said facts make Modern Mathematics holistic in nature with Computer Applications, which is the goal of this course.

    Dr. Srikanth Prabhu

    Dr. Prabhu is an Associate Professor at Manipal Institute of Technology. He holds a Master’s degree in Technology, in Computer Science and Data Processing and a PhD from IIT Kharagpur. He has delivered numerous keynote addresses and plenary addresses in India and abroad. He has numerous papers in international and national journals and conferences.

Think Like a Scientist (Physics)

  • Course Description:

    What is so dramatic about dropping in a magnet into a copper pipe? (Copper doesn’t attract a magnet, right?) If like (magnetic) poles repel and unlike poles attract how about floating a magnet in air? Well is this how Maglev trains or Elon Musk’s Hyperloop float/work? This course will attempt to answer such questions by building the necessary conceptual as well as the quantitative skills that will enable the inquisitive student to discover, learn and appreciate the process of doing science that leads to the engineering marvels that we see around us today. The other extreme end of comprehending the mysterious Universe around us will also be touched upon mainly to demonstrate the value of our efforts to theorize! This year we propose to further apply the theme – theoretical model building vs. experimental validations – to three main topics in Physics viz. Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Light/Optics. We will develop the theme in three stages. The first stage will be ‘conceptual brainstorming’ that will aim to inspire, elicit and build on the student’s imagination, logic and creativity. The second stage will involve formal theorization wherein the necessary analytical machinery along with the mathematics required will be injected into the discussions. Last but not the least, the value of doing experiments with an eye for all the details and with a view to validate our thinking (theory) will be stressed. All for the Love of Physics!     Dr. R D Prabhu

    Dr. R D Prabhu has had a lifelong love affair with Physics, which started as a youngster when he read a book on space rocketry and fell deeply in love with the stars, the galaxies and the Universe. After completing his PhD in Astrophysics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, he worked on research projects for over 15 years in leading universities and companies in the USA, Singapore, and India. His work contributed to the development of some of the tiniest of components that go into our smartphones.

The Science of Design

  • Course Description:

    This course offers a peek into the vast history of making and craft. Students will understand the evolution and importance of design thinking in day-to-day life and appreciate the spirit of conservation of resources. This course will instil a progressive approach to problem solving along with a "use-what-youhave" attitude. This course has been one of the most sought-after courses at ASP, and has maximum number of participants. We needed to close this course on first come first enrol basis last time and with Rube Goldberg machine , that was created by students in the last ASP was possibly a contender of a place in the Limca Book of Records!

    Shivraj Gaekwad

    Having studied from The Indian Diamond Institute, Surat, Shivraj has received the President’s Gold Medal for Excellence in the field of Jewellery Design. He started Shiv Tantra Creations and is associated with various NGOs to empower villagers, tribal people, women from low-income households, and students so they can incorporate the principles of design thinking to their local crafts.

  • Course Description:

    This course promises to be relevant as student understand how the external world influences us and how the same has impact on our internal world. Reflections, and ability to reflect is the key to all future professions by focusing on - the skills and capabilities that artificial intelligence has trouble replicating, i.e., understanding, motivating, and interacting with human beings - learning self and relationship management Students enrolling for this course will need to carry a laptop. They are advised to bring any musical instrument if they play.

Sustainability and Development

  • Course Description:

    This interdisciplinary course will help students understand the need for sustainable practices and empower them to use sustainable scientific practices and make healthy changes to their lifestyle. They will understand the impact of capitalism on our environment and health and engage in activities to understand the costs of sustainable and non-sustainable processes from the point of view of each stakeholder.

    Shipra Agarwal

    Shipra Agarwal is a facilitator and programme executer with expertise in the fields of education, sustainability and sanitation. She has facilitated over 400 hours of sustainability-themed sessions with over a 1000 children and adults over the last four years. Shipra works as a Project Manager at Skrap, a sustainability startup that focuses on waste management and zero waste implementation. She plays a vital role in helping organisations, large events and individuals embrace environmental sustainability and reduce their trash footprint. Shipra herself leads a Zero Waste Lifestyle and discards less than a bagful of waste in a year.


  • Course Description:

    The Young Roboticist is India’s only concept-to-product-to-code robotics program for students of 12-15 years. Students’ activities involve conceptualizing, designing, building, programming, and experimenting with robots. In addition, they will work on 3D modelling, design thinking and collaborative workshops..

    Every student receives a desktop AIbot as part of this program – this bot can be utilized for many more projects even beyond the program.

    Ms. VM Susan Jude

    Susan is a Co-founder & Head of Curriclum Modo Edulabs Pvt. Ltd. She has done major in Computer Science and has a relevant experience in teaching and curriculum design for primary school. She is passionate about teaching coding for young children, with special focus on block-based visual coding languages such as Scratch and Snap! She is also the co-founder of Modo Edulabs, a startup that aims to up skill school children in areas of technology innovations and digital literacy.

My World, My Voice

  • Course Description:

    Writing is not only done with the aim to publish and influence others but also to understand one's individual take on things, find one's unique voice and observe the world around oneself. This course will help students understand themselves better and express themselves more clearly through shared reading, discussions, games, etc

    Scharada Dubey

    Scharada has more than 19 fiction and non-fiction books to her credit and is working on yet another book. She is especially popular among children and adolescents. She is a feature writer for The Wire and has produced video reports for Doordarshan. Her essay 'Breathing Free' was published in an international anthology titled the ‘Writers Net Anthology of Non-Fiction’ edited by Gary Kessler.
