My World, My Voice

  • Course Description:

    Writing is not only done with the aim to publish and influence others but also to understand one's individual take on things, find one's unique voice and observe the world around oneself. This course will help students understand themselves better and express themselves more clearly through shared reading, discussions, games, etc. By the end of summer, students enrolled in this course will have a wonderful portfolio of the work done by them which they can proudly show to others.

    Scharada Dubey

    Scharada Dubey is a published author with more than 15 fiction and non-fiction books to her name. Though she writes for all ages, she has been especially popular among children and adolescents. She is a feature writer for The Wire and has produced video reports for Doordarshan. She lectured at various colleges including the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and Symbiosis College, Pune. Her essays have found recognition at various competitions and her essay 'Breathing Free' was published in an international anthology titled the ‘Writers Net Anthology of Non-Fiction’ edited by Gary Kessler.

Discovering Architectural Design

    This course is a journey into the hidden, but fascinating world of design through the field of architecture.

    Students explore architecture through;

    • Model making
    • Assemblage and sketching
    • Visits to architecture studios and temple towns

    By the end of the programme students will start seeing surroundings differently, thinking differently, and have the tools to make meaningful designs that add value to human life.

    a) Bhavin Shukla

    Bhavin, founder of ‘The Design Toolbox’, teaches Architecture at CEPT University. Apart from his engagement with the design of buildings, he has been actively involved in architectural research.

    b) Ramya Ramesh

    Ramya Ramesh, a faculty member at her alma mater, CEPT University studied MSc. in Building and Urban Design in Development from the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London.

The Science of Design Thinking

  • Course Description:

    This course offers a peek into the vast history of craft and making. Students will understand the evolution and importance of design thinking in day to day life and appreciate the spirit of conservation of resources. This course will instill a progressive approach to problem-solving along with a "use-what-you-have" attitude.

    Shivraj Gaekwad

    He studied Jewellery Design & Manufacture along with Diamond Grading and Gemmology basics at The Indian Diamond Institute, Surat where he received the President’s Gold Medal for Excellence in the field of Jewellery Design. His entrepreneurial venture is called Shiv Tantra Creations and it manufactures a wide array of handcrafted products. He is also associated with various NGOs and delivers sessions to empower villagers, tribal people, women from low income households, and students so they can incorporate the principles of design thinking to their local crafts.

  • Course Description:

    This course promises to be relevant to all future professions by:

    • Focusing on skills and capabilities that artificial intelligence has trouble replicating, i.e., understanding, motivating, and interacting with human beings.
    • Learning self and relationship management.

Forensic Science to Promote Investigative Thinking

  • Course Description:

    Which was the last detective series that you watched? Wouldn’t you love to wear the black overcoat, a black hat, big magnifying glass and sneak in through dark alleys to catch the criminal?

    But, have you ever thought how a crime scene is unfolded? Are murders, theft and attacks the only type of crimes? Can credit card fraudulence or a breach of cyber security amount to a crime?

     

    The course will focus on understanding various biological, chemical and physical principles of forensic science. Students will play detective, unravel the crime mysteries, and identify the right questions and arrive at their answers.

    Plant Biochemist by training, she has worked on tribal medicinal plants. She got interested in the study of Science of Languages to understand how words in different languages have evolved and how our communication is evolving.

    The concept of search engines, that is Google, came in the year 1998 using principles of mathematics. Even social networking sites like Facebook, Modern Airlines, Modern Airports, Metro railways, Bullet Trains - all the modern technological developments have come from Algebra, Matrices, Probability Theory, Permutations and Combinations.

    All the above said facts make Modern Mathematics holistic in nature with Computer Applications, which is the goal of this course.

    The answer to all these questions lie in data. Choose any field and you will find that data scientists play a critical role.

     

    Students in this course will develop an appreciation of what makes people ignore the reality of data, and the way in which data analysis is applied across diverse fields. Students opting for the course will need to carry a laptop.

Digital Storytelling

  • Course Description:

    In the age of information, we are increasingly finding ourselves lost in the torrent of enormous volumes of content. This course aims to enable students to become informed consumers of media while finding and embracing their own voices in the midst of all the chaos.

     

    Students will gain an appreciation for the nuances of the creative process across various media. They will rediscover the simple joys of starting with a blank slate and watching a vision come to life. They will challenge commonly held notions about beauty and worth, and dismantle the myth that in order to practise any creative art, one must be “trained” or have the "best" tools.

Shooting for the stars: Astrophysics and Astronomy

  • Course Description:

    This course is an in-depth introduction to the universe and how we earthlings attempt to understand it. Beginning with concepts that students are familiar with, the course would gradually explore how these are applied for studying and observing planets, understanding the composition and structure of galaxies, and figuring out how the universe we inhabit came into existence. The course will cover optics, telescopes, solar system objects, stars, galaxies, the origin of the universe, and exoplanets. The course would also include brief, introductory discussions of relativity, quantum mechanics, and astrobiology. The course also aims to familiarize students with critical thinking, and, ultimately, ask more and more questions about everything around them.

    Sakhee Bhure has majored in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Florida Institute of Technology, where she was a Resident Assistant, and worked towards making campus and department more sustainable. Currently, she’s a first-year Masters Degree student at the same university.
